Michael Marcus has been an important figure in the New York jazz scene for over 40 years. He began his career in the mid-1970s in the bands of Albert King, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Big Joe Turner.
In the 1980s, he played a key role in the clarinet's renaissance in modern jazz. His numerous recordings feature almost the entire family of woodwind instruments, moving between avant-garde and traditional.
He has worked with Jaki Byard, Billy Higgins, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrill, James Carter, Henry Grimes, Santi Debriano, Henry Threadgill, Sonny Simmons, Cindy Blackman-Santana, and many others.
