My Kung-Fu Conversation with Loneliness • Berndt, Tietjen • Tietjen

Without you, the future isn't what it used to be.  Everyone knows that cats always land on their feet. And the further a cat falls, the less severe their injuries. It's not like they can fly; they spread their legs wide, increasing air resistance. Apart from flying squirrels, no other animals are as good at surviving falls from great heights.

Small children could be declared free-fall stars; it's truly incredible. Some falls remain a mystery. Once, a child fell out of a window onto the hard concrete, and in the ambulance, the child asked if they could get a Band-Aid.

"He's a strong, brave child who thought he could fly," his mother said. The doctors were astonished; no broken bones, no injuries. They said, "It must be the increased fat on his bottom. It cushions." But a paramedic saw things differently: "It wasn't his bottom. It's as if the angels caught him."

Since you're no longer here, since you simply fell over, I've been in free fall too, only I don't believe in angels catching you, not in the Holy Spirit, not in community, not in the forgiveness of my sins, not in eternal life, and I don't believe that one can't fall any further than into God's hands. I'm falling into the abyss. But I do believe in one thing: I still believe you would come back under the right circumstances.
