To the special exhibition "Lygia Clark. Retrospective"
Tunnel, 1968- Two people move from different sides through a narrow, flexible fabric tunnel 50 meters long. They have to crawl past each other to reach the exit on the other side.
This creates a constricting feeling and evokes associations with a birth canal. If the participants feel too suffocated by the fabric, Clark cuts holes in the cloth through which they can breathe. This allows the people in the tunnel to receive help from the outside - a process that Clark also associates with childbirth.
Collective Head, 1969
The Cabeça Coletiva (Collective Head) is actually a hat. It consists of a wooden structure in which there are several compartments containing different things. There is an opening at the bottom so that the structure can be worn as a headdress, with the weight also distributed over the shoulders.
During her time in Paris, the hat was displayed in Clark’s apartment. The students who visited her kept adding new objects to the compartments – fruit, letters, shoes, cookies, strips of fabric, and more. The hat was worn as part of a performance in public space under Clark’s guidance. Passers-by were allowed to remove items from the object and view them as gifts.
They are invited to place any objects they bring with them in the compartments of the hat. At regular intervals, the Collective Head is worn by a performer in the exhibition and on the terrace of the museum and visitors are allowed to remove objects from the hat.
