To mark the 25th anniversary of the St. Matthew's Foundation, St. Matthew's Church has been transformed into a musical instrument: The artist and composer William Engelen has decorated the church below the galleries with a curtain of 366 metal sound tubes all around.
Each of the 366 sound tubes, each of which visualizes a graphic score with its different lengths, represents a day of the year, creating a room-filling, sounding calendar of the church year 2024.
Both musicians, who will play a composition by Engelen, and visitors can play the instrument, thus bringing the church and the year to life.
A play with time and eternity: the sound rhythms of the days, weeks, and months, everyday life and holidays, the church year and the calendar year, and the longing for eternity resonate together.
The exhibition is supported by the Association for Exhibitions of Christian Art, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Berlin, and the Mondriaan Fund for Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage.
