When three of the most visionary artists on their instruments come together, magic happens. With Béla Fleck, Edmar Castañeda, and Antonio Sánchez, the Zig Zag Jazzclub presents one of the most remarkable all-star ensembles in recent jazz history.
Formed in 2024, the BEATrio discovered its unique sound during a special twelve-night run at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village, where the trio fearlessly explored new, mostly co-written compositions. The unconventional lineup—banjo, harp, and drums—brings an unmatched freshness and originality to every performance, leaving audiences amazed. For this special concert, we’re moving with you to the Columbiatheater to experience these three extraordinary musicians on a full-size stage. An evening of boundary-pushing music—intense, virtuosic, and unforgettable.
Béla Fleck is an American banjo player and composer who has established the banjo far beyond Bluegrass, expanding it into jazz, classical, and world music. He is regarded as one of the most innovative virtuosos of his instrument. Since the 1980s, he has shaped the progressive Bluegrass scene with New Grass Revival. In 1988, he founded the genre-crossing ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, achieving international acclaim.
Fleck has collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Chick Corea, John Williams, and Jean-Luc Ponty. With over 30 Grammy nominations and 19 Grammy wins across nine different categories, he is one of the most decorated musicians of our time. His projects include groundbreaking jazz concepts, classical albums (Perpetual Motion), world music (Throw Down Your Heart), and duo performances with his wife, Abigail Washburn. Fleck is known for his technical brilliance, stylistic openness, and his influence on generations of musicians worldwide.
Edmar Castañeda is a harpist and composer who has redefined the role of the harp in jazz and Latin music. With a breathtaking mix of virtuosity, rhythmic precision, and expressive depth, he has established the Colombian harp as a serious voice in improvised music. His unique technique—combining melody, harmony, and complex rhythmic patterns—has earned him global acclaim and comparisons to jazz greats for his inventiveness and intensity.
Castañeda has performed and recorded with artists such as Hiromi, Marcus Miller, Paquito D’Rivera, John Scofield, Wynton Marsalis, John Patitucci, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. As a soloist and with his own ensembles, he has appeared at major festivals and concert halls worldwide. A recipient of multiple international awards and commissions, Castañeda is celebrated for expanding the boundaries of both jazz and the harp itself—bringing a rarely heard instrument to the center of the contemporary jazz stage.
Antonio Sanchez is one of the leading drummers on the scene. He began his career in his native Mexico until he moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. He then went to the New England Conservatory, from where he went on tour with Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra on the recommendation of his teacher Danilo Perez.
Pat Metheny discovered him during this tour and thus began Sanchez's leap into the jazz elite. He recorded two albums with the Pat Metheny Group and later continued to work with Metheny on several albums. Through these collaborations and his ambitious solo projects, he has worked with musicians such as Chris Potter, David Binney, Donny McCaslin, Chick Corea, Enrico Pieranunzi and more. He has also been awarded several Grammys. Also noteworthy is his work on the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film Birdman by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which earned him another Grammy, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe.
THIS CONCERT WILL TAKE PLACE AT COLUMBIA THEATER, COLUMBIADAMM 9-11, 10965 BERLIN!
