Ali, a Muslim, family man, and garbage collector, is a guest worker and popular with his colleagues. He has his own views on the country and its people, which he describes with naivety and humor in broken German.
He feels sorry for his lonely old neighbor, resents the garbage on the streets, and despises the Germans' love of dogs. He marvels at the German language and fears the radical right.
During the course of his monologue, it becomes clear that Ali's house was set on fire by skinheads, and that his wife and one of his sons lost their lives.
Speaking is a means of taming the cruel past, taking heart in one's own hands, and envisioning a better future.
An emotionally rich monologue that poignantly reflects German society and the problems of a multicultural society. The inspiration for this play by Iranian-born author Ali Jalaly was the 1993 arson attack on a house occupied by a Turkish family in Solingen. Starring Jurij Diez.
