Physiognomy of an extreme right-wing party

The AfD - Alternative for Germany - doubled its share of the vote in the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025 to 20.8%, making it the second strongest political force. The party was founded in 2013 as a protest against the euro bailout policy.

Originally conservative-liberal, but to the right of the CDU/CSU, it presented itself as the main opponent of Chancellor Angela Merkel's refugee policy after 2015. The AfD subsequently achieved numerous electoral successes, including entering the Bundestag in 2017. Its programme and rhetoric has become increasingly radicalized and now unites both traditional supporters of right-wing extremism and right-wing populism. There is currently increasing public discussion about banning the party.
