The international festival FRACTO. Experimental Film Encounter returns to the ACUD Kunsthaus in Berlin from 22 to 25 May 2025.

Since its foundation in 2017, FRACTO has established itself as one of the few European platforms dedicated entirely to avant-garde and experimental filmmaking.

The festival is aimed at professionals from the art and film scene as well as art and film enthusiasts who are interested in new aesthetics and innovative ways of working.

Programme 2025

This year, FRACTO brings together 33 experimental short films from 21 countries, including several world, European and German premieres. Films will be shown in five curated programmes on 16 mm, 35 mm and in digital formats. Films will be shown that work and experiment with analogue formats, experimental cuts and unusual rhythms.

"Instead of narrative structures, atmosphere, visual language and materiality take centre stage in the selected films. Experiments with the medium of film create new spaces of perception and turn cinema into a sensual, physical experience. Dóra Maurer's retrospective also invites us to explore the cross-border possibilities of experimental film," says Giuseppe Boccasini, founder and artistic director of FRACTO.

Retrospective Dóra Maurer

A special highlight is the two-part retrospective of the Hungarian artist and key figure of the neo-avant-garde Dóra Maurer (born 1932). Her cross-media experiments in graphics, photography and film reflect a multi-layered story of her work and resistance during Hungary's socialist era. Supported by Collegium Hungaricum Berlin and the Hungarian National Film Archive, the
retrospective will show a selection of short and feature-length films by the artist on 23 May and 24 May.

Workshops & Participation

This year the festival is offering the workshop ‘Recipes of Disaster - Direct Animation and Looping with 16 mm Film, Paper and Scotch Tape’. Filmmakers Christin Turner and Christian Flemm will introduce direct animation and give anyone interested the opportunity to try out analogue film techniques for themselves. Participation is limited to 20 people. Registration is now open on the festival website.
