Lied und Lyrik: Lord Byron

"Mad, bad, and dangerous to know" – this is how one of his many lovers described the poet George Gordon Byron. In the early 19th century, the scandal-ridden lord not only caused a stir with his dissolute love life, but also challenged the moral conventions of his time with his rebellious lifestyle.

So-called "Byronism" quickly spread throughout Europe and inspired artists from a wide variety of disciplines – not least to numerous musical settings of his works.

Tenor Kieran Carrel and pianist Julius Drake present a selection of these musical responses. The renowned theater and film actress Dame Harriet Walter, who already appeared in a "Song and Poetry" evening in 2024, will read from Byron's poems and letters.
