With Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, the Deutsche Oper Berlin brings one of the most popular family operas of all time to the stage. In Andreas Homoki's imaginative production, the well-known fairy tale unfolds as a poetic, colorful stage experience.

Accompanied by music that hovers between folksy children's songs and late-Romantic sonorities à la Wagner. Under the direction of Friedrich Praetorius, the work becomes an unforgettable operatic experience for young and old.

The Plot: A fairy tale full of courage, magic, and music

Hansel and Gretel live in humble circumstances. As punishment for their reckless behavior, their mother sends them into the forest to pick berries – unaware that a dangerous witch is wreaking havoc there. Lost in the dark forest, they dream of angels at night and discover a gingerbread house in the morning.

But what begins as a fairytale soon becomes a threat: The witch takes them captive. With courage and cunning, the children manage to defeat the witch – and with her, break the spell that held many other children captive. A triumphant victory of imagination over evil!

The Music: Between folk song and Wagnerian magic

Humperdinck combines catchy melodies such as "Ein Männlein steht im Walde" (A Little Man Stands in the Forest) and "Abends, wenn ich schlafen geh'" (In the Evening, When I Go to Sleep) with a cleverly crafted score full of late Romantic color. The opera delights both opera novices and connoisseurs with its orchestral density and emotional depth – an ideal introduction to the world of classical music for children aged eight and up.

About the Production: A Fairy Tale Full of Images and Emotions

Director Andreas Homoki tells the story clearly, in a child-friendly, yet emotionally gripping way. Together with set designer Wolfgang Gussmann, he creates a visually impressive fairytale world. The night scenes in the forest are particularly enchanting with atmospheric lighting and stylized dream sequences.

The Witch – a highlight of the production – provides a pleasantly creepy experience with a wink. Humor, suspense, and hope combine to create an evening of opera that will delight children and adults alike.
