The exhibition ‘Das Mietshaus in der Wohnungsfrage’ (The Apartment Building in the Housing Question), held at the Tuntenhaus, showcases the untapped potential of historic buildings, as presented by the Department of Architecture of Transformation at the TU Berlin.

In light of the stagnant rental market and lack of affordable housing, the students' designs advocate shifting the focus away from new construction and towards activating the so-called invisible vacancy in Wilhelminian-style buildings.

Through architectural interventions and new sharing models, the exhibition explores how Berlin's traditional tenement blocks can be developed sustainably through communal living and social diversity.

The presentation includes adaptive development scenarios that demonstrate how occupancy density can be improved by renegotiating private and communal spaces. The designs treat the apartment building as an experimental, real-world laboratory for effective conversion practices that consider ecological, economic, and social factors.

During the exhibition, the venue will serve as an open forum for discussion, inviting visitors to engage with the students in conversation about transformation processes and the potential of individual living spaces.
