As the year draws to a close, we are looking forward to the coming year and would like to share with you what we are looking forward to in 2024. A whole host of major highlights await us in Berlin next year - from the European Football Championship to the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We have put together our personal favourites from the editorial team of the visitBerlin blog for you here.

Discover a ray of hope in Berlin's grey winter at transmediale

Josefine: When the grey in Berlin is almost unbearable, the transmediale beckons with experimental exhibition and performance formats. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in exciting worlds of art and sound and discovering new and exciting artistic approaches for three days.

In addition to exhibitions, performances, screenings and workshops at silentgreen and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, there will once again be concerts and DJ sets in collaboration with the CTM music festival, including a club night at Berghain. Incidentally, the overarching theme of this year's Transmediale is "you're doing amazing sweetie", which translates roughly as "you're doing great, sweetie": and we could all really do with some nice praise in the long Berlin winter.

Kristin: I'm particularly looking forward to the Berlinale in grey February, when the film world comes to Berlin again and lights up the city. And the great Martin Scorsese will receive the Honorary Golden Bear. As every year, I will be reporting daily on the Berlinale in my blog, about the stars, the films and a look behind the scenes of the festival.

Catrin: What is the skate season without a start at the Berlin Half Marathon? Only half the fun. On 7 April, the inline skaters start with the 21 kilometres through Berlin's city centre and the runners follow immediately afterwards, who will also be cheered on by thousands of Berliners on their sightseeing tour. And to help you train, we have put together the 11 most beautiful routes here.

Dagmar: The great painter of romantic pictures of longing celebrates his 250th birthday. His world-famous works will be exhibited in several cities such as Hamburg and Dresden. The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin will not only present numerous paintings and drawings by the famous artist throughout the summer of 2024, but will also be dedicated to the exciting story of his rediscovery in Berlin in 1906.

Maja: I'm looking forward to next year. I'm looking forward to the warm days, the chirping birds and the summer air. I'm looking forward to long evenings with friends, afternoons at the lake and the many sunsets. I'm looking forward to open-air concerts and festivals where people dance, laugh and sing. I'm looking forward to good days and happy people.

Cheering on the EURO 2024

Kristin: I like to think back to the 2006 World Cup in Berlin, when the whole city celebrated a summer fairytale. Fans from all over the world cheered on their teams at the public viewing at the Brandenburg Gate and in the pubs and beer gardens. The atmosphere was incredible.  Berlin will certainly prove to be a great place for a peaceful football festival again this summer at Euro 2024.

Josefine: Are you also looking forward to being able to put your coat, scarf and hat back in the back of the wardrobe? When the days get longer from June onwards, the whole of Berlin is drawn outside. First to the parks and gardens, the beer gardens and the many beautiful places along the Panke, Spree and Landwehr Canal. And in summer, it's time to cycle out into the countryside to the lake. You can easily reach many of the bathing lakes in Berlin and the surrounding area by bike or public transport.

Dagmar: Autumn in Berlin is going to be eventful - in the truest sense of the word! To mark the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November, there will be a flood of open-air events, exhibitions, guided tours and interactive activities in addition to the official ceremony. Together with thousands of visitors, the metropolis of Berlin remembers the moment when the world was changed from Berlin.

Experience the reconstruction of the Ferris wheel at Spreepark

Maria: It has been possible to visit the historic Eierhäuschen restaurant again since spring 2023. In 2024, the restored Ferris wheel will be rebuilt and, with a bit of luck, will be spinning again. A partial reopening of the Spreepark has been announced for the new year. The concept focuses on art, culture and sustainability. The former leisure and family park in Plänterwald originally opened in 1969 as the "VEB Kulturpark" of the GDR and lay fallow after its closure in 2002. restart spreepark

Dagmar: This has never been seen before in Berlin: the opportunity for anyone and everyone to watch Berlin archaeologists at work at the authentic site of exciting excavations - from the elaborate examination and restoration of the excavated objects to their interpretation and exhibition. This will be possible at the end of 2024: in the new PETRI Berlin, above a medieval Latin school on Petriplatz in Mitte - where Berlin began.
