Special Exhibition: Foundation on Antiquity – Berlin’s First Museum at the Altes Museum Berlin

The special exhibition Foundation on Antiquity – Berlin’s First Museum at the Altes Museum takes you back to the founding of Prussia’s first public museum. It highlights the visionary architecture of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the sweeping social changes of the 19th century. The exhibition showcases remarkable artworks ranging from ancient sculptures to exquisite vases and bronzes — pieces that already captivated visitors in 1830.

A large-scale model of the museum’s original exhibition halls and rare historical images bring Schinkel’s masterpiece to life. At the same time, the exhibition looks ahead, encouraging reflection and dialogue about the future of the Altes Museum — with the aim of inspiring generations to come. Discover the roots of a world-renowned museum that continues to fascinate its visitors to this day.

Permanent exhibition: Ancient Worlds. Greeks, Etruscans and Romans

The permanent exhibition at the Altes Museum includes not only the extensive collection on Etruscan and Roman culture, but also a large number of important objects from Greek antiquity.

The starting point of the exhibition is located on the main floor. Besides warrior statues and helmets, sanctuaries and funerary monuments of the 6th century BC are exhibited here. In the North Hall, visitors to the Old Museum experience a world of gods, heroes and legends on vases and in the form of sculptures, including the master vases of Andokides and Euphronios and the Amazon of Polyklet.

In addition, the permanent exhibition includes objects from the era of Hellenism, which offers insights into both the life of rulers and the everyday life of ordinary people. A magnificent collection of ancient coins as well as "350 Years of the Collection of Classical Antiquities" in time-lapse form the conclusion of the tour.
