May is full of public holidays - and Father's Day and Mother's Day also usually fall in this first warm and sunny month of the year. This means you can celebrate twice with the family. Berlin is the perfect city to spend quality time together and do something special that everyone enjoys. So that you don't run out of ideas, we have put together a lot of tips for gifts and ideas for day trips for Mother's Day and Father's Day. By the way: This year Father's Day is on 18 May and Mother's Day on 14 May.

There's a lot going on in Berlin on Mother's Day weekend. We've picked out the highlights for you. And maybe you won't just invite your mum, but book a place for your dad as well. That way he can look forward to an early Father's Day present.

How about a boat trip on the Spree and Landwehrkanal? The boat departs at 11 a.m. from the Schlossbrücke in Charlottenburg or at 11.45 a.m. from the Reichstagsufer. During the sightseeing tour, of course, you can also enjoy a delicious meal and, if the weather is nice, a cool drink on the deck while squinting in the sun. And what could be better than brunching in fine weather while cruising through the government district? Alternatively, you can have brunch on the waterfront at Freischwimmer or end your Mother's Day outing with coffee and cake on the Restaurantschiff.

There is also a lot on offer culturally on Mother's Day: Performances of the Theatertreffen Berlin 2023 and concerts of the XJazz Festivals fall on the weekend.

More cultural tips for Mother's Day weekend

  • Concert: Star Wars in Concert
  • Dance: Interbeing
  • Performance: Barbaren Barbies | A wild woman circus
  • Theater: Rahel
  • Opera: Gaetano Donizetti (World premiere)

If the weather is fine, you can of course invite your mother to a picnic in the countryside, for example in the Britzer Garten. On Mother's Day, Stella rockt! will be playing on the festival stage by the lake from 5 pm. While mum and dad are rocking out, the little guests can shape little houses and sculptures at the clay-making workshop at the play landscape in the clay village.

Father's Day in Germany is traditionally on Ascension Day. One of the classic customs is the "men's day party". For men who want to celebrate this day traditionally, yet with their families, we have a selection of beautiful breweries:

In sunshine it is particularly beautiful in one of Berlin's beer gardens. And for a family outing together, we have put together some great destinations in Berlin and the surrounding area. Or you can ride your bikes together. There are great tour suggestions for a bicycle tour for all Berlin districts, whether you want to go out to the water or cycle across the city to the most famous sights.

Program for the whole family

The most valuable gift is the time together anyway. For all mothers who just want a nice day with the whole family, here are a few ideas for a Sunday on land, on water or in the air.

Alternatively, you can also plan an excursion to Brandenburg or really let off steam with a joint outdoor activity. We have put together a list of the best tips for a family outing together.

In addition to the tourist boat trips on the Spree, you can also rent your own raft from many providers in Berlin and go on board with the family. You don't even need a boating licence! All you need to bring with you is a good mood, your entire crew and a bathing suit, because all rafts have a sun deck and you can always jump into the water anyway.
