Thhis year the asparagus season starts early. Now the restaurants in Berlin and the surrounding area conjure up all kinds of fine dishes from the popular "Spargel" vegetable. From the classic "asparagus with ham and potatoes" to asparagus as soup, casserole, salad and completely new creations, the delicious range extends. As asparagus grows well on the lean soil of the Mark Brandenburg, the area south of Berlin is the perfect asparagus country with Beelitz as its secret capital.
For the asparagus season in spring we have compiled our 11 tips for a few selected restaurants in Berlin and the surrounding area.
Tip 1: Alter Krug Dahlem
Fresh asparagus has arrived and the Alter Krug in Dahlem has released its asparagus menu. Here you can enjoy specialities such as asparagus with fried eggs and, of course, fresh asparagus spears served with salmon, pasta or schnitzel in a cosy atmosphere. Incidentally, this rustic country inn is not far from the Botanical Garden and the Domäne Dahlem.

Tip 2: Jäger & Lustig
In this rustic restaurant and cosy beer garden, you can enjoy home-style cooking with a modern twist – and that naturally includes the region’s most popular spring vegetable. The asparagus menu features asparagus salad, asparagus with ham or Wiener schnitzel – served with melted butter or hollandaise sauce.

Tip 3: Zollpackhof
From 15 April, you can enjoy delicious asparagus at the Zollpackhof, Berlin’s first restaurant specialising in day-trip dining, with views of the Federal Chancellery and the River Spree. In the cosy restaurant and on the terrace, you can enjoy traditionally prepared asparagus spears – served with or without schnitzel and accompanied by hollandaise sauce – as well as asparagus cream soup or asparagus risotto.

Zollpackhof
Tip 4: Scheune
The season has also begun at Scheune. The asparagus menu features classics such as asparagus with scrambled eggs, ham, schnitzel, steak and sauce, as well as specialities like quiche, pasta with asparagus or asparagus tarte flambée. This rustic restaurant is situated in the romantic Grunewald – making it the perfect base for an exploratory walk through the woods and down to the Havel.

Tip 5: Carl & Sophie Spreerestaurant
You can enjoy asparagus with a view of the Spree at the Carl & Sophie Spreerestaurant on the site of the former Bolle dairy. And the asparagus is special too, as it is grilled over charcoal. Those who prefer a more traditional approach should try fresh asparagus from Kremmen, served with a choice of baked ham, schnitzel or tender fillet of Wolowina.

Tip 6: Restaurant "Zur S-Bahn Kaulsdorf"
This popular eatery has a long history, having been in business for around 120 years. In the cosy interior, you’ll feel as though you’re in a historic S-Bahn carriage, complete with S-Bahn doors and benches.
With the classic asparagus dish, you can choose between rump steak, zander, salmon or schnitzel as a side dish. Why not combine your visit to the restaurant with a hearty walk along the Wuhle, where you’ll get to know Marzahn from a completely different angle.

Tip 7: Lorbeer
The Lorbeer restaurant serves creative cuisine made with regional produce: in keeping with the season, a delicious asparagus menu features on the menu – including a creamy soup with asparagus tips, premium Beelitz asparagus with Wiener schnitzel and a colourful selection of desserts. You’ll also find other specialities featuring delicious asparagus, such as gnocchi, on the menu.

Tip 8: Renger-Patzsch
The cosy Renger-Patzsch restaurant is best known for its delicious tarte flambée, which was already served here by its predecessor, the Storch restaurant. But with the first rays of spring, the fine, top-quality Beelitz asparagus also appears on the menu.
By the way: Albert Renger-Patzsch was a renowned landscape photographer, whose pictures adorn the dining room.

When: Monday – Saturday 6pm – 11pm
Tip 9: Barra
Barra, in the trendy Schillerkiez neighbourhood, is entirely dedicated to seasonal cuisine, so spring has naturally made its way onto the menu here too. Alongside other fresh, spring-inspired delicacies, you can also try white asparagus with crab meat and blackcurrants.

When: Monday – Friday 6pm – 11.45pm
Tip 10: Wilhelm Hoeck
Wilhelm Hoeck is a true institution, as it is one of Berlin’s oldest pubs. The rustic atmosphere transports you back to old Berlin days. The dishes and drinks are also traditional, such as Senfeier or Eisbein, as well as Berliner Weisse.
Now you can also get fresh asparagus here – served with a wide selection of side dishes such as scrambled eggs, ham, schnitzel or beef fillet.

Tip 11: Jakobs Spargelhof Beelitz
In Beelitz, the asparagus capital, and around Berlin, there are numerous restaurants and asparagus farms well worth a visit or a bike ride. Jakobs Spargelhof Beelitz is arguably one of the best-known farms. Here, you can take home as much asparagus as you like or enjoy a meal right there in the restaurant.
