Galleries and Restaurants

Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent reunification of Berlin, Auguststraße in Berlin-Mitte has been able to establish itself as a gallery district. Exhibition rooms such as the Kunst-Werke Berlin have enjoyed a great deal of international attention and shaped the character of the street. However, some chic and fashionable exclusive restaurants have recently opened here, contributing to Auguststraße’s enhanced reputation as a trendy nightlife spot.

Jüdische Mädchenschule (Jewish School for Girls)

The mixture of galleries and restaurants so typical for Auguststraße is best embodied by the Jüdische Mädchenschule (Jewish School for Girls). The long-standing empty building was eventually reopened in 2012 as a house of art and culture. Alongside the Fuchs Gallery and a branch of the prestigious Photo Gallery Camera Work, the elegantly unostentatious clinker construction dating from the twenties is also now home to the urban charm of the Grill-Royal Pauly Saal Restaurant. Hot on their heels have followed The Kosher Class Room with delicious kosher cuisine and the Mogg & Melzer Deli with typical New York dishes. Typical for the new restaurants here is the simple elegance and cosmopolitan feel. In autumn this year, The Kennedys Museum is also moving into the former Jewish School for Girls.

Clärchens Ballhaus

Clärchens Ballhaus (Clärchen’s Ballroom) first opened is 1913 and has since become a Berlin legend. Here you can dance the night away in style in the nostalgic ambience and elegance of the ballroom. During the week, salsa, tango and swing evenings are on the programme.
Diagonally opposite on the other side of the street, Berliners and visitors to the city can enjoy sitting in the Strandbar Mitte, (Mitte Beach Bar), which – albeit without a beach – nevertheless epitomises the typically casual-relaxed Berlin attitude towards life.

Other restaurants in Auguststraße

Since the end of the 1990s, regional products have been served in the Italian restaurant with the poetic name Al Contadino Sotto Le StelleSlow Food (its wine bar its located in Gormannstraße just round the corner). The Brasserie Nord Sud serves French cuisine and has three menus every day. And, of course, Spain is also represented by the Restaurant Ruz in Auguststraße.
