Until the 20th century, calligraphy and painting were mainly reserved for neo-Confucian scholars or painters of the royal court. The gradual emergence of an art market enabled artists to create their own works. Traditional themes were interpreted more freely and traditional techniques were used more freely. Modern artists express the themes they encounter using the techniques they have learned and the traditional methods of representation. Contemporary Korean painting is in a constant state of tension between tradition and contemporary concerns.

Still lifes, landscape scenes, flower and bird paintings as well as portraits find new, lively and fresh forms of expression. For example, the national symbol of the humorous tiger is transformed into a Pop Art-like cipher. Genre paintings from the 19th century are used to discuss current social issues and the contrasts in ink painting are still expressive today and even allow references to political conflicts in the traditional East Asian manner.
