Hebbel am Ufer HAU 1-3
Avant-garde in three buildings
Political and avant-garde, young and experimental - the Hebbel am Ufer unites all theses attributes within its three project spaces, HAU 1-3. Under the directorship of Matthias Lilienthal, the Kreuzberg theatre-houses Hebbel-Theater, Theater am Halleschen Ufer and Theater am Ufer were in 2003 brought together, forming the today’s standing theatre alliance.
Both in content and in form, the three theatre-houses offer a wide range of events: the documentary theatre of Rimini Protokoll also belongs to the programme, which include sound installations or interactive performances that in its cross-genre also involve the audience. Contemporary dance is also an important part of the concept, and with the “Tanz im August” or the Brazilian festival ”Move Berlim” is correspondingly awarded its space.
The international guest performances make the Hebbel am Ufer furthermore into an important venue of cultural dissemination. Theatre ensembles out of the entire world are here given the opportunity to present themselves to the Berliner audience. At virtually no other theatre in the city are there so many foreign language pieces with surtitles brought upon the stage.
Festivals such as the meeting of independent theatre troupes “100° Berlin” convey the latest trends and pave the way for future collaborations. At the same time, HAU’s concept also transcends the physical boundaries of the stage, producing conferences or new genre projects within the space of the city itself. As an important meeting point not only for the exchange of views and ideas, belongs in addition, the comfortable tavern WAU - Wirtshaus am Ufer at the HAU 2 theatre-house.
The three performance venues are located in three separate buildings within close proximity to one another:
HEBBEL AM UFER – HAU 1: Stresemannstr.29 in 10963 Berlin
HEBBEL AM UFER – HAU 2: Hallesches Ufer 32 in 10963 Berlin
HEBBEL AM UFER – HAU 3: Hallesches Ufer 10 in 10963 Berlin
