Every year at Easter the FESTTAGE festival draws music lovers to Berlin. Initiated by Daniel Barenboim, it was held for the first time in 1996, and has proved to be a major attraction, on a national as well as international level. Excellent musical theatre and concert performances are the hallmark of the FESTTAGE, as is an atmosphere emphasizing the extraordinary character of the artistic events.

And so it goes for 2017 too, when great operas and symphonies as well as piano works will be performed in the Schiller Theater and the Philharmonie as part of the FESTTAGE repertoire. The audience can look forward to two impressive mythical narratives: the new production of Strauss’ monumental opera »Die Frau ohne Schatten« and the restaging of Wagner’s festival drama for consecrating the stage, »Parsifal«. The musical directors of these two exceptional works will be Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim, two of today’s most important conductors. And Claus Guth and Dmitri Tcherniakov are the stage directors who are known for their original scenic interpretations and vivid visual solutions.

The Staatskapelle Berlin, the Staatsopernchor and excellent singers will guarantee highest musical quality. In 2017 the Staatskapelle and Daniel Barenboim will again be performing two symphony concerts. Two top-class musicians have been recruited as soloists: Anne-Sophie Mutter and Radu Lupu. And Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim will be performing »four handed« on two pianos together for the third time. Additionally, our well-known guest orchestra, the Wiener Philharmoniker awaits you and they will be adding particular splendor to the Easter festival in Berlin.

FESTTAGE 2016 will be presenting an exciting contrast in the form of two major works from opera history — namely the new production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and the restaging of Wagner’s Parsifal. Notwithstanding all stylistic differences, what the two works have in common is their search for truthfulness — in terms of the protagonists’ actions as well as the general statement to be imparted by the text and the music. Both operas will be conducted by Daniel Barenboim. State opera theatre manager Jürgen Flimm will be staging Gluck’s masterly reform opera, and Dmitri Tcherniakov will be performing Wagner’s monumental »festival drama for consecrating the stage« in its scenic version. The five FESTTAGE concerts cover the period from Bach to the great symphonies of late Romanticism. Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma and Jonas Kaufmann are the brilliant soloist we will be going to hear: As in the past few years, we can expect concerts in a class of their own when they perform with Daniel Barenboim and the two orchestras, Wiener Philharmoniker and Staatskapelle Berlin.
