For those who want a sporty start to meeting their New Year’s resolutions: for the 44th time, active Berliners will gather on New Year’s Day to run headlong into the new year.

The 4 km route from the Brandenburg Gate, past Unter den Linden, to the Berliner Dom and back is friendly to the party-weakened. An application prior to the race is not necessary and neither is there an entry fee.

With a route covering just 4 kilometres from the Brandenburg Gate down Unter den Linden to the Berlin Cathedral and back, this run is ideal even for those who might have partied hard the night before.

The first Berlin New Year’s Run was started in 1972 by Heinz Florian Oertel, the most famous sports reporter in East Germany at the time. The run took place in the Volkspark Friedrichshain until 1990. Since reunification, the race now takes place along the splendour of Unter den Linden through the heart of Mitte.

The starting pistol goes off at 12 noon on the dot on New Year’s Day. There is no participation fee; instead, donations for the Björn Schulz Foundation are requested.
