Despite of being a metropolis with approximately 3.4 million residents, Berlin is the ideal place for a exploring tour by bike! Without being handicapped by steep hills or narrow curves, you move easily through Berlin as a bicycler.

Nearly all big streets are featured with a bicycle track. Some older tracks are not ideal for speedy biking; a new law allows to choose between using these tracks or riding the bike on the road. But it is obligatory to use the bicycle track when marked with the blue bicycle traffic sign.

The large extension of Berlin and the widely spread places of interest are good arguments for using a bicycle. Those who want to visit the Gedächtniskirche in the western city and the museum island in the former eastern part on one day, have to be good walkers or are obligated to make use of the public transportation system. Riding a bike reduces the distance between these places to a few minutes. Furthermore, various marked bicycle routes connect important places in the city.

A very special and comfortable way to explore Berlin is to go by Velotaxi. You can find the modern vehicles on four main routes: Kurfürstendamm, Tiergarten, Potsdamer Platz, Unter den Linden. Individual tours and sightseeing are possible on request. The prices are to be arranged with the driver before the ride starts. In general the first kilometre costs 5,00 € per Velotaxi, every other kilometre 2,00 €.

The numerous parks and promenades along the rivers, lakes and canals of Berlin will be discovered by bike, far away from road traffic. In most parks cycling is officially allowed; however,you should be considerate of pedestrians. The forest and lake landscape in and around Berlin can be reached rapidly. They offer a calm atmosphere far from this pulsating city. Therefore it takes only a few minutes from the busy Kurfürstendamm to get to the extended Grunewald forest and the beautiful lakes of the Havel River.

One of the most interesting bicycle tours leads you along the former position of Berlin´s wall. Most parts of the paved patrol path still exist and are suited for cycling. In the city centre the run of the disappeared wall is marked by a cobblestone line, here you can follow the ex frontier between east and west on quiet side streets. There are some recommended bicycle maps available: For riding in Berlin, theres for example the "ADFC-Stadtplan für Radfahrer" (city map Berlin for cyclister, issued by the German bicycle club ADFC).
For tours to the surrounding areas you should have a look at the ADFC Regional maps "Berlin und Umgebung" and "Potsdam und Umgebung" scale 1:75,000, available in nearly all book shops. These maps offer lots of tour suggestions; streets and tracks in these maps indicate traffic density and surface conditions. Find more maps on the web page of the ADFC Brandenburg.
