More than just a cycling track
Pure excitement, fast chases, cycling at the highest level – and a colourful show programme as well: the six-day race, a highlight of Berlin’s sporting year. These exciting races are held at the Velodrome.
The current Velodrome is on the site of the former Werner Seelenbinder Hall, which was used for sporting events, Socialist Unity Party congresses and concerts in the GDR. After its demolition in 1997, the Velodrome was constructed - originally as part of Berlin’s Olympic bid.
The Velodrome is located next to the swimming and diving halls at the Europa Sports Park, and contests are held in a dipped, park-like bowl. The view from the exterior shows only the spectacular wooden roof construction. Its comparatively modest exterior hides the true scale of the hall underneath: the circular arena offers space for around 12,000 spectators, and the 250-metre cycle track within has the reputation of being one of the fastest in the world.
The modern arena in the Prenzlauer Berg district also hosts large-scale events and concerts, including big names like Robbie Williams, The Cure and Rammstein.
