The Story of Berlin
The Story of Berlin
Exhibition with a guided tour of an original nuclear bomb shelter
The Story of Berlin is a multimedia exhibition with over 20 theme-rooms which show over 800 years of the capital's history: from its trading centre status in the Middle Ages to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Using modern exhibition features combined with original models and lavishly reconstructed historic facsimiles, visitors enter different historical worlds.
Since the days of the Berlin Blockade in 1948-49, the Berlin Senate made provisions for emergencies and threats during the Cold War. This included senate reserves in Essen, clothing, fuel and shelters. One of the highlights of the "Story of Berlin" interactive exhibition is a guided tour of an original nuclear bomb shelter under Kudamm Karree which, despite its central location, was largely kept a secret from the people of Berlin until it was opened to the public.
Built in the 1970s on behalf of the German government, the shelter is still active today and could provide almost 3,600 people with food, air and water in the event of a nuclear disaster. In addition to the bunker, the exhibition includes 23 themed rooms set in an area of 6,000 square metres. With state-of-the-art multimedia technology and walk-through scenes, these take visitors on a fascinating journey through 800 years of the city's history. This is a museum with a difference.
