Volkspark, or the ‘People’s Park’, Prenzlauer Berg is situated in the east of Berlin’s Pankow district. It spans approximately 29 hectares and is located on top of what were once piles of debris.

The land on which the park stands today was arable and fallow land in the 19th century before it was turned into allotments in the 1920s. At the end of the Second World War, the area was quickly turned into a dumping ground for piles of debris when Berlin needed to find a place to store the rubble and remains of Alexanderplatz.

It was only in 1967 that the area was landscaped - mostly with modest, hardy perennial trees from Europe. The area was renamed “Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg” when the paths were finally laid in 1969.

With its trees, green areas, footpaths and nature trail, today the park invites its visitors to take a stroll, go jogging or simply pass the time. The Volkpark Prenzlauer Berg offers those who live nearby the perfect opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There’s also an adventure playground for children. You can fly kites in autumn, and in the winter you can even go tobogganing.

A Berlin Wine Society has been growing wine in Prenzlauer Berg since 2009. The Berlin Riesling cannot be sold but it can be given to wine lovers for a donation. The winemakers also offer wine tours.
