Potsdam Museum: Forum for Art & History

Potsdam History, Potsdam Stories

The Potsdam Museum tells the history over the past 1,000 years of the city's history. The Baroque building has shone in its full glory since its re-opening in 2012. The interior is also artistic. Over an area of 1,300 square metres, the museum presents the history and works of local personalities. It is the goal of the museum to bring art, culture and history together under one roof. The museum focuses on the period between the 19th and 21st centuries. The exhibits are varied. Potsdam Museum houses research documents and sources tracing the city's history back to the Middle Ages. Everyday objects like photos, clothes and furniture are also part of the permanent exhibition "Potsdam: Making City History".

Altes Rathaus Potsdam Museum: history thematically organised

Explore the chequered past of Potsdam in its elegant old town hall. Embark on a tour of the bright, spacious rooms and experience the city's history. Potsdam Museum is established in 1909. Today, the museum has over 270,000 exhibits. As soon as you enter the glazed entrance area, a special atmosphere is palpable. Exhibits are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and bright herringbone parquet. First of all, take a look at the permanent exhibition "Potsdam: Making City History". Over 800 square metres, the exhibition highlights the city's history thematically rather than chronologically. Contents range from city developments, persons and relations to the relevance of art, interior and urban design. The role of the capital is also discussed. Discover testimonials of the Königlichen Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin (Royal Porcelain Manufacture Berlin) or admire Biedermeier cabinets and chairs in matching ensembles. The photography includes around 100,000 images of the cultural, political and urban history of Potsdam. The diverse activities of Potsdam's citizens in the areas of research and science are illustrated, while the "Identity and Homeland" exhibition focuses on Potsdam since the reunion of East and West Germany. Read slogans of the contemporary citizens' movement on original posters, panels and at interactive media stations. You can also deepen your newly acquired knowledge in the museum library.
