Picnic in the Tempelhofer Park

Picnic in the Tempelhofer Park

Bread and candy instead of the candy bomber (name Berliners endearingly gave to US transport planes during the post-war blockade!).

This used to be a busy airport for many decades, also being the nub of the Allies’ supply flights - especially during the post-war airlift. After being closed down in 2008, the airport area was then re-opened for alternative use. Since then, visitors have been able to take advantage of the many green areas alongside the overgrowing runways for jogging, playing games and of course for picnics. There is also a special grill area available. On sunny days, however, would-be picnickers are well advised to take a parasol with them. There’s absolutely no protection from the sun on the runways!
