Tradition of the highest standard
KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens – the ‘Department Store of the West’) is the best-known department store in Germany, comprises 60,000 square metres of sales floors, making it the largest on the European continent. Ever since it first opened its doors in 1907, the store has offered an attractive mixture of upmarket and luxury goods. As you enter, a top-hatted doorman will greet you and offer information in a choice of seven languages if you are looking for particular items. The seven-storey KaDeWe has everything the heart can desire: more than 380,000 items are on offer. The ground floor houses the perfumes and cosmetics department and a luxury arcade for jewellery and watches. Three upper floors display luxury fashion brands, including a branch of Dolce and Gabbana. The sixth floor has the almost legendary delicatessen department, with around 110 cooks and 40 bakers and confectioners supplying more than 30 gourmet counters with culinary delights from around the world. Over 1,000 seats in the restaurant on this floor make it the largest in the city.
The KaDeWe was founded by the Jewish businessman Adolf Jandorf and has been extended and refurbished many times. After the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate, it is the third-most popular tourist attraction in Berlin.
