GRIPS Theater

The creative theatre for young people and adults

The GRIPS is a streetwise theatre for young and old, where everyday problems are skilfully explored on stage. The team initiates many projects for schools.

Emancipatory theatre with "brains" for all generations

The GRIPS theatre in Berlin-Mitte has been the stage for contemporary and political plays for children and young people since the 1960s. GRIPS founder Volker Ludwig wanted to show young audiences reality, show them perspectives on life and, above all, encourage them. To this day, social problems are staged artistically and young audiences are met where they are. The success is international: GRIPS plays have been staged over 1,800 times worldwide in 50 countries and 40 languages.

From rap musicals to cult classics

Every season, GRIPS celebrates four to five world premieres. One example is the stage version of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, whose film of the same name became a blockbuster. Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac has been reinterpreted here with witty dialogue and rap interludes to deal with themes such as adolescent compulsion to compare and the longing for recognition.

Adults also get their money's worth: the cult musical Linie 1 about Berlin underground railway passengers has been celebrating success for years. From the Wilmersdorf widows to the Kreuzberg punks, the production delights everyone who loves Berlin and its inhabitants. In addition to the main stage on Hansaplatz, the play is also performed on a studio stage in Podewil.

Encounters and education: theatre education

GRIPS invites everyone to engage with social and political issues. The theatre education department offers formats for following up on the productions and promotes direct exchange between the stage and the audience.

Information for schools: The GRIPS team comes directly to Berlin schools for playful follow-up work. Plays such as Linie 1, #diewelle2020 and Das schönste Mädchen der Welt are particularly suitable for school trips.
