GRIPS Children’s and Youth Theatre
With a winning combination of brains and wit, GRIPS Theater has been developing realistic children’s and youth theatrical pieces since the 1960s that take a critical stance with the lives of its audience members. It produces original comedies and musical premières. GRIPS has been and remains a theatre that wants to encourage its viewers and show that the world can be changed on both a small and a large scale.

With up to five premières a year, GRIPS Theatre caters not only to children and teenagers but also offers pieces addressed to adults. This includes the cult musical LINIE 1 (“Line 1”) as well as pieces such as FRAU MÜLLER MUSS WEG (“Ms Müller must go”), a comedy about a parents’ evening grandly staged by film director Sönke Wortmann. DIE LETZTE KOMMUNE (“The Last Commune”) by Peter Lund (text) and Thomas Zaufke (music), is a piece for three generations and was a long-running hit for the house in 2013. Smaller and more intimate productions are performed at GRIPS Podewil, a second stage on Klosterstraße in Berlin-Mitte. As at the main stage in the Hansaviertel, the plays at GRIPS Podewil encourage cross-generational cheers and laughter as well as some good old foot stomping and whistling.

GRIPS founder and long-time director, Volker Ludwig, has written over 40 children’s, youth and adult pieces and remains the theatre’s writer-in-residence and managing director. In 2011, Ludwig passed on the artistic direction of the company to Stefan Fischer-Fels. Fischer-Fels seeks to maintain the core idea behind GRIPS: the telling of strong, relevant stories, while bringing renewal to the artistic programme by being open to new forms of storytelling and contemporary aesthetics.

Infos for school classes

The theatre offers free subject evenings to school classes of all ages, which will provide an impression of a production at work in advance of a premiere using excerpts from scenes from the play. Afterwards the artists will invite the pupils for a discussion. Tickets for regular performances are available to school groups at discounted prices. Special prices, however, are only for school classes from Berlin.
