War and peace in the Wedding district

The Anti-War Museum presents historical facts on the topics of war and peace, and features an original air raid shelter from World War II. The privately operated museum can look back on a lot of its own history: it was founded by staunch pacifist Ernst Friedrich in 1925, destroyed in 1933 by the Nazis, and was finally re-opened by Friedrich’s grandson Tommy Spree in 1982.

The Anti-War Museum has photographs, documents and objects from both World Wars on display, including medals, pro-war propaganda post cards, original diaries and letters from soldiers, and photographs of the maimed. Also on show are war toys from earlier centuries. A large world map shows current sites of confrontation around the world. And the exhibition also elaborates on modern warfare, including chemical and biological weapons. A staircase leads down into an original air raid shelter dating back to World War II, equipped and furnished with original utensils from that time, where visitors can experience first hand what it must have felt like to sit and wait for the bombs to fall during many sleepless nights.
