Berlin Wall bike tour

Cycle along the former Berlin Wall

A double row of cobblestones marks the 5.7 kilometers of the Berlin Wall in the city center. From the East Side Gallery to Potsdamer Platz to Bernauer Straße there are memorials, remains of the wall, former border watchtowers and information boards with photographs and texts that provide historical information.

Ride the Wall Cycle Path by bike.

Start the tour at the East Side Gallery [1]: At 1,316 meters, the art mile on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuous section of the Wall that is still preserved. Via Mühlenstrasse you reach the corner property Stralauer Platz [2], here you can see the listed remains of the hinterland wall. Continuing across the Schilling Bridge you come to the former border crossing at Heinrich-Heine-Straße [3]. The route takes you further to the Peter Fechter memorial. From there, following Zimmerstrasse, you reach the former Friedrichstrasse/Checkpoint Charlie border crossing [4], where the Wall Museum [5] awaits you.

Memorial Bernauer Straße

As you continue, you come to the site of the Topography of Terror [6] - with around 200 meters of original wall. Along Stresemannstrasse, in the direction of Potsdamer Platz [7], the boards of the “Berlin Wall History Mile”, information steles and a currently covered watchtower of the GDR border troops point out the time of division. You can also visit the small museum Die Mauer/The Wall there. With the S1, S2 and S25 to the Nordbahnhof station you will reach Bernauer Straße [8] in just 7 minutes. There, the Berlin Wall Memorial [9] with a visitor center, monument, former watchtower, documentation center and the Chapel of Reconciliation commemorates the division of Germany.

The complete Berlin Wall Trail

Do you have a little more time and are not afraid of longer journeys? After Bernauer Straße, get back on your bike and follow another 150 kilometers of the former wall and Berlin history. The former, mostly asphalted column path is still largely preserved and is therefore ideal for cycling. If you follow the signs, which are posted exactly at the wall's height of 3.60 meters, the route will take you past old wall fragments, border paths and other sights.
