Kunstverein Tiergarten / Galerie Nord
Contemporary Art in Berlin-Moabit
The Kunstverein Tiergarten | Galerie Nord in Turmstraße has developed into a vibrant centre for contemporary art.
The Galerie Nord is the only location for visual arts, science, and culture in the district of Moabit in Berlin with an internationally focused programme which reflects the situation of the urban environment with topical exhibitions. It is a public forum for art exhibitions, cultural projects, and scientific events. The gallery programme focuses on the presentation and mediation of contemporary art with an innovative, critical and relevant potential; by adding cultural projects and scientific events, it is intended to reach broad levels of the population, also beyond the limits of the district. Situated in a former worker’s area with a high rate of unemployed people and migrants, it is not a ‘natural’ location for a gallery, but with a comprehensive mediation programme they have been reached. Far from the centre of contemporary art in Berlin-Mitte, the gallery has also succeeded – with constantly developing its programme in the last five years – in attracting the regular art audience from all over Berlin. The gallery is run by the Kunstverein Tiergarten, which has been founded in 2005, and which – with its growing number of committed members – also organises cultural festivals for the district and other events outside the gallery. In an effort to broaden its scope, the Kunstverein regularly collaborates with a number of international galleries, art academies and other cultural institutions.
