On 10 January 2025, Notagallery will kick off the new year with ‘The Unrequested’, an exhibition that explores art beyond market recognition.

Art has always been closely intertwined with systems such as patronage, trade and consumption, which shape its creation and perception – from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary algorithm-driven trends. ‘The Unrequested’ challenges this relationship and invites visitors to reflect on how art can exist outside of such structures.
The exhibition draws on philosophical and critical discourses, inspired by theorists such as Boris Groys. In his influential work Art Power (2008), Groys criticises the commodification of contemporary art and calls for a creative freedom that operates independently of institutional or economic constraints.
His ideas permeate the exhibition and view art as an autonomous act of resistance, speculation and exploration.
With works by an international group of artists, ‘The Unrequested’ reimagines creativity as a radical, self-determined process. The works refuse hyper-commercialised definitions of ‘value’ and ‘desirability’ and open up new perspectives on the transformative power of artistic expression that challenges normative boundaries.
Notagallery invites us to reflect on art's ability to transcend external expectations and to engage in a dialogue about the role of creativity in an increasingly consumerist and commercialised world.

Founded in 2022 by artist Ivan Gette, Notagallery breaks with the traditional white cube concept and offers an inclusive space for exchange and collaboration between artists from a wide range of disciplines. Through dynamic exhibitions and interdisciplinary events, the gallery enriches the cultural landscape and promotes emerging and established talent.
