The trademark of the Archenhold Observatory is the giant telescope, which was built in 1896.
With a focal length of 21 metres, it is the longest fully movable refracting telescope on earth.
With a lens diameter of 680 millimetres, it is also one of the ten most powerful refracting telescopes in the world.
The colossus weighs a total of 130 tons and is still fully operational today.
In a short lecture you will learn how the telescope and the observatory were built and get to know the eventful history of the house.
Afterwards we will show you how the telescope works and demonstrate it in motion.
