TraLaLiest - The public reading round of TraLaLit

Zoë Beck has translated all of the Irish bestselling author's books into German, including the novel Normal People, on which the highly successful BBC series of the same name is based.

In Intermezzo, Rooney tells the story of two dissimilar brothers, Peter and Ivan, who are confronted with old wounds following the loss of their father. Peter, a disillusioned human rights lawyer, is in a relationship with the young Naomi, but he is still attached to his first great love, Sylvia. Ivan, an introverted chess player, develops a genuine affection for Margaret, who is going through a break-up, but their age difference puts a strain on their relationship. Both brothers struggle with feelings of guilt, the search for meaning and the need for closeness. In her new novel, Rooney draws on familiar motifs while also testing out new territory.

At the event, participants will discuss their reading experiences, favorite quotes and, of course, the translation. There will also be an opportunity to ask the translator Zoë Beck questions.

Zoë Beck, born in 1975, writes, translates and runs CulturBooks Verlag together with Jan Karsten. Studied English and German literature in Giessen, Bonn and Durham. Creative Producer for international television film productions at KirchMedia. Editor for dubbing productions (Disney Channel), subsequently working to this day as a dialog writer and dubbing director. Freelance writer and literary translator since 2004.

Julia Rosche is co-founder of TraLaLit, where she writes about translated literature and moderates events. She studied English and German language and literature in Freiburg, Oxford and Berlin.
