Passion, drunkenness, madness, these are the defining emotions of the Sturm und Drang, which find expression in the sufferings of young Werther, young Goethe. Rejection of everything ordinary, longing for inwardness and the inevitable realization of a necessary departure define Werther, infected the young readership of yore to such an extent that the work was banned for a time, and are initial feelings for the later Romantics. The French director Julien Gosselin takes the gap to the world conjured up and painfully felt by Werther as the subject of his theater evening and approaches the history of German literature from a great distance, if only in terms of time. Literature becomes a dramatic tool by means of which the gap to the world of the past cannot be closed.

Under the heading Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress), Julien Gosselin begins the first part of a production that will run for several seasons and, together with the ensemble, creates a newly told history of German literature in series. Known for his adaptations of great novelistic works for the stage, he follows the awakening movement from Sturm und Drang through Weimar Classicism to Romanticism, interweaving early Goethe's central text The Sorrows of Young Werther with Thomas Mann's reflection on Goethe, Lotte in Weimar, which could also be Mann's retrospective on German culture: In the time of Goethe, the aged poet meets the female protagonist at Werther's side in Weimar, many years after their tumultuous youth, as the undead of German literature. Thomas Mann prefaces his novel with the sufferings of the young and old Lotte, who has not been mentioned further in the story. What about the original couple of unhappy love, can she escape the projection on the role she plays in life and literature? What was, is past, but Lotte, Werther and Goethe remain attached to their pasts, each in a different and own way.
