In 1610, the English composer Michael East published an unusual set of eight fantasies for five viols depicting the spiritual journey of a sinner. Interspersed with the fantasies are consort songs by William Byrd, whose texts reflect the wanderings from despair to bliss, and whose profound music intensifies their personal experience.
