Rembrandt & Menzel

Master of printmaking in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett

Rembrandt Hermansz. van Rijn (1606-1669) is not only a virtuoso of oil painting, he is also regarded as a leading star of the graphic arts. Already during Rembrandt's lifetime his prints were appreciated, collected and soon also catalogued. The attributions were initially more confident than critical.

While the catalogues of works from the 18th century counted up to 375 graphic works by the master, at present there are still about 290 etchings considered works by his hand. To this day - 350 years after his death - the works have lost none of their fascination. The name Rembrandt has become a trademark.

Rembrandt also found countless admirers and imitators among artists. The Berlin painter Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) wrote to a friend in April 1844:

"I am now hanging around a lot in the Kupferstichkabinett, enjoying the etchings of the Dutch, especially Rembrandt, who is and remains the solitaire among all of them, the more often you look through him, the more reverence you get for him; [...]"!

Menzel studied Rembrandt in the 1840s in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, which was then open to the public in Monbijou Castle, near the Museum Island. Inspired by the style of the chief etcher, Menzel, who was a printmaker by birth, even experimented with the etching needle himself. This exhibition is dedicated to Rembrandt's etchings, as Adolph Menzel was able to study them in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett in the 1840s, and shows twenty-five prints by Rembrandt and four works by Adolph Menzel resulting from his confrontation. An exhibition by the Kupferstichkabinett in the Gemäldegalerie
