Monika Bolte is fascinated by cemeteries – their atmosphere, their diversity and their history. Her exhibition shows impressions from the garden of eternal sleep.
Monika Bolte's exhibition is a photographic, painterly and graphic reproduction of grave sculptures that can be seen in historical cemeteries. Her pictures document the variety of motifs and the beauty of sepulchral art in European cities.
When walking through an old cemetery, your eyes seek out the beauties of sculpture. Your preference for structure and surface, brittleness, rust and randomness has awakened your interest in figurative grave sculpture, especially the figurative representation of women.
The "Image of the Mourners" is a revival of the ancient custom of the mourning women at the grave and their New Testament interpretation as mourners at the grave of Christ. The depiction of the mourners has been modified again and again - with and without wings, sunken, laying a wreath or scattering flowers.
