In its historically significant rooms, the Schinkel Pavilion presents important works by Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) that deal with the themes of war, militarization and flight and reflect the medial embedding of images.
Polke's early interest in visual information and the power of images makes him a role model for artists of younger generations and underlines his unbroken relevance - the supposedly historical proves to be highly topical.
The exhibition includes works from the 1960s to the 2000s, including paintings, photography, films and prints - some of which have not been shown publicly for decades. Polke's political approach is present in all of his works.
The size of his artistic cosmos and his sense of innovation are groundbreaking. Polke anchors his image sources in the reality of newspaper news and looks deep back into history with an inquiring mind. He was not only a precise analyst, but also ahead of his time as a critical commentator.
The exhibition was initiated and organized by the Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin, in collaboration with the Fondation Vincent van Gogh in Arles. It was curated by Bice Curiger.
