Maciej Markowicz's first comprehensive solo exhibition in Berlin is a record of his contemplative reflection on the city created using a unique technique: the moving Camera Obscura.

Born in southern Poland, the artist associated with Berlin for the past six years, modernized the Camera Obscura technique in his artistic practice, using mobile vehicles with a built-in camera that he created himself.

Based on the basic principles of photography: light and photosensitive material, Markowicz makes photographs from inside his van or barge.

During a series of events accompanying the exhibition, it will be possible to participate in the artistic process inside a barge while cruising down the Spree.

“The invention of photography coincided with the development of cities. A camera allows one to record a catalog of topics of emerging modernity: streets, buildings, vehicles, lighting. Observation in motion, recording the process of changing cities in the context of the past inspired the Berlin-born philosopher, Walter Benjamin, to create a portrait of Paris, a collection of essays "Passages". His texts are a reflection of a "spatial form" - non-linear, devoid of the applicable principle of temporal sequence of elements," writes Dr. Wiktoria Michałkiewicz in the curatorial text.

In Markowicz's work, paper negatives represent an abstract experience of place and time, the poetics of the postmodern city. Due to the nature of the artist's creative process - exposure made directly on a sheet of color photographic paper, resulting in large-format paper negatives - each photograph is one of a kind and a unique work of art. It is a contemplative record of reflections on the city from the last six years: "Berlin Passages''.
