25th Jazz and Blues Days Lichterfelde: “Blues Women. Strong Voices and Their Stories” / Reading & Concert
The reading is about an approach to the blues, whose social roots can be found in the African-American community. The blues is their musical language.
Often witty and ironic, the African-American blues divas create a new image of women in their songs: the self-confident and self-determined, energetic African-American woman. In their lyrics they sing about pure joy of life, about the joys, but also the sufferings of women who are doubly oppressed in US society: by the racist white society and by their men. Full of energy, the blues women sing to their female audience about the problems that women face in everyday life and about coping strategies for their lives marked by poverty, violence and economic worries.
Text excerpts from the book are read and accompanied by the appropriate blues songs with vocals and by the pianist and bassist.
