When dead birds are found on a mountain above the city of Pompeii, the immigrant Jowna has an intuition: If there really is a volcano rumbling, as some people claim, then one must look the other way. Without schooling, money or influence, he manages to put himself at the head of a dropout movement.
Soon the city leader Fabius Rufus fears that the volcano rumours could harm Pompeii, but it is only when one of the rich citizens also seems to give a damn about the danger that Livia, the most powerful woman in the city, intervenes. Jowna swings round. Faced with disaster, he does - nothing.
Eugen Ruge's Pompeii is an invention based on historical truth: a distant mirror in which we recognise ourselves.
