Book premiere

Didier Eribon had actually planned to visit his mother regularly after she moved to a nursing home, but she died a few weeks later. As in “Return to Reims,” this turning point becomes the author’s starting point for a journey into the past. His new book ruthlessly explains how politics has long suppressed the scandalous situation of many old people.

Using impressive episodes and touching memories, he shows how important family and origins are for our identity. In this way, the sociologist unfolds a portrait of a vanished world: the French working class - with its concerns, its solidarity, its prejudices.
