Dieter Hacker - political photography (1974-1981). Blackbox #5

As part of the European Month of Photography

The artist Dieter Hacker (*1942), who is now known primarily as a painter, was intensively engaged in amateur photography as an artistic-political medium in the 1970s. Together with Andreas Seltzer he published the magazine "Volksfoto. Newspaper for Photography".

Address

Bröhan-Museum

Schloßstraße 1A 14059  Berlin

The six issues were accompanied by exhibitions in which the analogue photos that hackers received from various private individuals were brought together to create interactive room installations. The installations thus addressed the relationship between the private sphere and the public, the individual and the masses, art and waste. Outside of these "folk photos", Hacker took his own photographs, routes and installations, which comment not only on theories of the history of photography, but also on the bourgeoisie of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Bröhan Museum pays tribute to Hacker's photographic work with a solo exhibition, whether "folk art" or social media: The questions about the power and powerlessness of floods of images, the photo as an instrument of self-presentation, are more topical than ever in times of Facebook and Instagram.
