Not presented with a chronological account, the visitor progresses through a range of themed areas examining 27 separate topics: the border, Berlin, traffic and travel, youth, education, work, consumption, state security, construction, housing, family, the media, fashion, leisure, culture, holiday, the environment, the Party, the economy, the state, ideology, the army, international relations, the Berlin Wall, the opposition, prison and the authorities. Every section presents original artefacts, each telling the unique story of life in the GDR.
Since the enlargement of the exhibition in August 2016, visitors can experience an typical DDR apartment with five rooms. Not merely content to present a world-beating exhibition, we at the DDR Museum place great importance on the high-quality educational services which we provide. Including guided tours through the exhibition, workshops, city tours and audiences with eyewitnesses, we take seriously our responsibilities as a public educator and ensure that they are diffused with a high level of sound scholarship. We provide tours and other services in 15 languages.With a capacity for 50 people, our visitor centre is used for a wide range of activities including lectures, workshops, seminars, lessons, discussions and film screenings.
