The Romanian Cultural Institute Berlin is showing a solo exhibition by the renowned Romanian artist Constantin Flondor at the [Ceci n'est pas une] Gallery from 13 September to 8 November 2024 at the RKI.

Conceived by Constantin Flondor and curated by art historian Alina Șerban, the exhibition Whispers in the Garden bridges his recent works with the defining visual experiments and studies from the 1960s and 1970s. By linking the various phases of his creative journey, the exhibition offers deep insight into the reference system that has shaped Flondor’s artistic development for nearly five decades.

Biography

Born in 1936 in Czernowitz, in Northern Bukovina, based in Timișoara since 1948, Constantin Flondor is a leading figure of post-war avant-garde art in Romania. His interdisciplinary artistic practice and adherence to principles of order in the systematic study of reality align his work with a type of objectivity that emphasizes visual research, systemic thinking, advanced technologies, and the role of visual education.

As a central figure in the art groups he founded—111 (1966–1969) and Sigma (1969–1978)—Constantin Flondor continuously explores new artistic pathways using a variety of media, including painting, kinetic and optical art, land art and action, experimental film, and photography. Despite this breadth, he has never abandoned his study of nature, as even his most geometric forms reference the vegetal world. Through film and photography, he has returned to painting, expanding his visual research and contributing to the establishment of the Prolog Group in 1985.

The exhibition is kindly supported by Diehl Gallery (Berlin) and Jecza Gallery (Timișoara).
