Blonde hair originated around 11,000 years ago as a genetic mutation in northern Europe. Only two percent of people are naturally blonde. A relatively rare phenomenon—and therefore desirable for some. Blonde hair is associated with youth, attractiveness and purity, and a wide variety of statements are made with blonde hair: social advancement or rebellion and independence.

At the same time, being blonde has become a symbol of whiteness. With a mixed cast of “non-blondes”, Four Non Blondes explores the many nuances of blondeness, incorporating the cultural history of blonde hair and the personal experiences of the performers.
