Berliner Oratorien-Chor
For 120 years, the Berlin Oratorio Choir has stood for innovatively designed programmes and high artistic standards. On Sunday, 30 March 2025, at 8 p.m. in the Berlin Philharmonic, it will once again treat its audience to a special, exhilarating sound experience.
Programme:
- Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Fantasia for piano, choir and orchestra in C minor (1808), op. 80
- Georges Bizet (1838-1875): Te Deum (1858)
- Robert Schumann (1810-1856): Missa sacra (Messe In C-Moll), op. 147 (1852/53)
In the Choral Fantasy Beethoven combines a piano concerto with a chorale cantata. It is considered a hymn to art, and many see it as a precursor to the Ninth Symphony. No wonder: in the finale Beethoven introduces the theme on which he also bases the ‘Ode to Joy’.
The Te Deum is Bizet's only sacred choral work. Some hear in it the style of pompous Italian church music, which is known for drawing on elements of opera music.
Schumann's ‘Missa sacra’ is noticeably far removed from church music, both musically and textually. Even contemporaries saw it less as a mass than as a romantic rhapsody with a peculiar colourfulness that even violated liturgical conventions.
Participants:
- Yvonne Elisabeth Frey (aka Yvonne Friedli, soprano),
- Minsub Hong (tenor),
- Markus Vollberg (bass),
- Wataru Hisasue (piano),
- the New Prussian Philharmonic,
- the Berlin Oratorio Choir,
- conductor: Thomas Hennig
The Berlin Oratorio Choir – one of the city's oldest lay choirs. Since its founding in 1904, the Berlin Oratorio Choir – then still called the Berlin Volks-Chor – has made it its mission to perform both popular and lesser-known choral works in order to bring them to a wider audience.
It will be an evening of sacred works that are not actually sacred, because in their works the composers focus more on the musical content than on religion – each in their own unique way.
