The Beauty of the Big City

Images of Berlin from Gaertner to Fetting

Die Schönheit der großen Stadt (The Beauty of the Big City) is the title of a book published in 1908 by the philosopher and architect August Endell, which invites readers to open their eyes to the big city and so recognize opportunities for further development.

Address

Ephraim-Palais

Poststraße 16 10178  Berlin

Using Endell’s basic ideas as a starting point, the major new exhibition at the Museum Ephraim-Palais shows how artists ranging from the 19th century to today have seen the urban and social structure of Berlin. Whether the artists picture Berlin as ‘Athens on the Spree’ or as a bustling metropolis, what is stake is the city’s external appearance and the hidden beauty it contains. That beauty can be revealed to us through painting.

In this way, visitors to the exhibition are invited to use these pictures to sharpen their own vision of the city’s essence, concealed behind the dirt and grey facades.
