We dare to take a critical look back into an exciting future, which the Berlin municipality defined during the 1950s with a large-scale, urban development. At the former “Knie” traffic junction, “the new face” of Berlin was created, centered on the western districts. Instead of concentrating on the old splendor of Kurfürstendamm, something new was created here with unrestrained self-confidence: dynamic motorization combined with an unprecedented urban opening for sophisticated individual buildings from culture and business.

As well as the office buildings of the global corporations Osram and Telefunken, the new city center also expanded the scientific potential with the Technical University and the University of the Arts, now the UdK.

The walk shows how much the innovations of that time are still recognizable today and interwoven with the history of the city.

Against the background of the current cultural changes between Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Steinplatz and Savignyplatz, one encounters interesting traces of influential artists everywhere, including Bauhaus members, politicians, gallery owners and innovative shopkeepers.
